| Customer Reviews: Average Rating: Rating : - Eleven Rare Cartoons Based on the Comic Strip Imperishable comic strip SNUFFY SMITH goes on and on. Originally the 1919 comic strip BARNEY GOOGLE, in 1934 traveling man Google ventured into hillbilly territory with the introduction Snuffy Smith and his wife Loweezy and the strip stayed there, though Google himself went bye in the late 1950's. SNUFFY SMITH (still called BARNEY GOOGLE in many newspapers despite his disappearance for decades) rarely counted as one of the legendary comic strips but it has survived and flourished to a degree acccomplished by only a small handful of other comic strips and has outlasted every other hillbilly humor venture from the strip LIL ABNER to the movies MA & PA KETTLE to television's BEVERLY HILLBILLIES and is still going strong.
SNUFFY however hasn't had as much luck as most successful comic strips in spinning off in to new areas. A couple of "B" movie comedies based on the series were released in the 1940's and in 1963 fifty six-minute cartoons were produced based on the strip. Seldom seen since, eleven of those cartoons are collected for this extremely rare VHS, produced in the last years of the format's flourishing and before DVD. These cartoons are very successful at capturing the look of a comic strip which bright colors and limited backgrounds. Surprisingly, Barney Google (already gone from the strips) is in nearly every cartoon in a pivotal part but most of the cartoons center around Snuffy and Weezy. Apparently the Smith's baby Tater and their nephew Jughaid were not yet in the strip as they are not seen in the cartoons, nor is Loweezy's gossipy pal Elvirney. Although nowhere near as funny as the comic strip when it's at it's best, these cartoons are enjoyable and worth seeking out for fans of the strip and cartoon buffs and are very much of their era with topical references as trips to the moon, beatniks, "inventions of the future", and the like.
